This WWDC 2022 has not left anyone indifferent, with one of the most complete presentations by Apple in many years, with a number of new features, both aesthetic and productivity, and of course, some hardware.
We have been able to know everything about the new iOS 16 lock screen and messages, or the multitude of interesting features added to iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, or macOS Ventura, presented yesterday at WWDC 2022.
Although many of these may sound innovative to Apple users, it is true that several of them were already available, even long before, from Google. That does not mean that Apple’s implementation in many of them is superb, being at first much better than those offered by Google.
That is why we bring you a list of 7 functions that these new operating systems by the bitten apple for your devices, which we can already find in Google products in its ecosystem.
I. Improved and customizable lock screen
It’s perhaps the most striking change to come in iOS 16, and it’s amazingly comprehensive and intuitive. It will allow users to customize their lock screens, with multiple clock styles, fonts, and accents to choose from. The design of it, not the functionality, is made quite similar to Google’s already-designed Material You, which made its debut in Android 12.
Widgets have also been included, something that Android already stood out for having for more than 10 years, along with Android 4.2. Today it has some At A Glance widgets (exclusive to Pixel), but it does not allow any customization. Instead, Apple offers a multitude of widgets and formats to choose from, which makes it a more consistent and complete implementation.
II. Fitness app available on iPhone and iPad
This is perhaps the funniest of all because it has taken Apple ages to bring the features of this app made for the Apple Watch to its devices.
There are countless applications such as Huawei Health or Google Fit that allow us to calculate and view the statistics of our movement throughout the day, but that can finally be done natively in Apple without the need for an Apple Watch.
III. Shared photo libraries
This is perhaps one of the least expected features of this software presentation by Apple users, but it was necessary for a better experience with other platform users.
This is one of the star features of Google Photos, although the way to share albums is not as simple as in iOS nor does it have the same features, it is still very stable and easy to use.
IV. Mail app enhancements
Apple has decided to add a series of functions and improvements to its email application, including a better search system, and the option to cancel sending mail, or reminders to reply to messages.
It should be noted that all these functions have been in Gmail for several years now, some available for almost 10 years. But there’s a big point in Apple’s favor here, at least it has a native desktop mail app, which Google should have done long ago.
V. Improved Live Text, with video support
Artificial intelligence emerges with this new functionality, which now also offers the possibility of translating text from an image, something that Google has been doing through Lens for several years now.
The interesting thing is that Apple has managed to implement its Live Text also in videos, which allows us to obtain, copy or translate text by pausing a video, and here Google is not capable at the moment.
It should be noted that Apple has also taken the opportunity to add a very interesting function, which not only applies to Live Text but also to its system globally, and is the addition of unit conversions natively.
With this, if we select a price or an amount of weight or distance in a photo or text, it will allow us to copy it in other currencies (dollars, pounds), weight formats (pounds, kilos) or distance units (kilometers, miles ). We look forward to Google adding this.
VI. Stop support in Apple Maps
We have to admit that we hardly even remembered that this function was not part of Apple Maps, since it had been expected for years and we took it for granted that it would not arrive.
With this new function we can establish up to a maximum of 15 stops on our journey, something that was already available on Google Maps since 2016, although with the limitation of only 9 stops.
VII. Emojis and punctuation with keyboard dictation
Perhaps the function in which Google stands out the least on Android is since the operation of both after the presentation of this functionality is practically identical.
This system was introduced in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro thanks to the Tensor chip, but Apple has achieved natively using its AXX Bionic.
These are the 7 functions in which Apple has been inspired by Google, which is not bad at all, and that we have also seen in the other direction.
What is clear is that the implementations by Apple, although they are late, are usually more complete in general in their launch date than some that have been in Google ecosystems for a few years. We hope this will make both companies more competitive and focus on offering more and better features.
