The Conmebol classification for the 2022 Soccer World Cup is the tournament that will determine the national teams that will attend the aforementioned tournament to be held in Qatar on behalf of the South American Soccer Confederation .

Conmebol has 4 direct places and 1 place granted for the playoffs, according to the decision of the FIFA Executive Committee to maintain the distribution of places by confederation. The 10 teams will face each other in two rounds, with home and away matches (home and away), between October 2020 and March 2022. The first four will qualify directly, while the fifth will play a playoff with a team from another confederation, which was originally scheduled to be played in March 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was postponed to October 8, 2020.

On December 17, 2019 in the city of Luque ( Paraguay ), the calendar draw for the qualifiers was held, in said draw the order of dispute that each selection will have was determined.

On 14 February 2020 it was announced that all knockout matches will feature VAR .

On March 12, 2020, FIFA, in collaboration with Conmebol, announced the postponement of the start of the South American qualifiers, scheduled to start in March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 25, FIFA announced that the South American qualifiers were going to start in September if the health situation allowed it. However, on the following July 10, FIFA announced that the South American qualifiers would begin in October 2020. Adding a double date in January 2022 will also be analyzed in order to finish the qualifiers in March of that year.

Competition format

The process will maintain the format adopted since qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France . The ten teams will face each other in the all-against-all system, placing themselves in the final table of positions according to the points obtained. 16

The final classification will be established taking into account the points obtained in each match, at the rate of three for a match won, one for a draw and none in case of defeat. If at the end of the qualifiers two teams equal points, the mechanisms to break the tie are the following: 17

Best goal difference in all group matches.
Most goals scored in all group matches.
Greater number of points obtained in the duels between the tied teams.
Best goal difference in duels between tied teams.
Most goals scored in the duels between the tied teams.
Greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between the teams in question.
Best fair play score.
