The best-supporting actress at the Oscars 2022 spoke about identity and acceptance
Ariana DeBose won the statuette thanks to her work on “West Side Story” as Anita, a Puerto Rican immigrant who works as a seamstress in New York.
His powerful speech began by mentioning that dreams do come true even in “crazy times” and ended by noting that, regardless of questions about a person’s gender identity, there will always be a place in the world for everyone.
“I am grateful to be in the United States, because even in these crazy times, dreams do come true… Imagine this girl in the backseat of a white Ford Focus. Look into her eyes and you will see an openly queer woman of color and Latina who found her life and strength in art. That’s what we celebrate here. So if anyone has ever questioned your identity, I promise you there is a place for us.
Troy Kotsur gave a message of inclusion in sign language
The protagonist of ‘CODA’ (2021) is deaf in real life and after winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, the public did not react with the classic clamor of applause, on the contrary, silence reigned in the Dolby Theater.
It turns out that the guests stood up and effusively turned their palms, which in sign language means applause.
This is how, upon reaching the podium, the actor gave a beautiful speech about inclusion in sign language:
“My dad was the best sign-maker in the family, but he had an accident in a car; he was paralyzed from the neck down and could no longer sign. Dad I learned a lot from you, I will always love you and you are my hero. Thank you to my wife and daughter, to my town in Arizona. I just want to say that this is dedicated to the deaf community and the ‘CODA’ community. This is our moment”.
The moment of silence for the victims of the Russia-Ukraine war 2022
Those attending the 2022 Oscar Awards observed a minute of silence in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
“We would like to ask for a moment of silence to show our support for the people of Ukraine who are suffering from invasion, conflict and prejudice within their borders,” said a message on the center screen of the Dolby Theater.
Likewise, people were invited to show their support in some way, especially with resources so that the affected families could have access to food, water and medical attention.
At the same time, several celebrities attended the gala with blue pins or bows to show their solidarity with the refugees.
Will Smith broke down in tears mentioning how much he wants to “love and protect his people”
Will Smith rose as one of the winners of the night for Best Actor for his work in ‘King Richard’ (2021). So in his thank you speech he compared himself to his character by feeling identified in his way of protecting his family.
“At this point in my life, I am in awe of what God has allowed me to be and do. I want to love and protect people, to be a river for my people. I know that [actors] have to be able to put up with a lot of things, that they say crazy things about you, because that’s how this business is, one has to put up with being disrespected and laughing as if everything was fine.
