This is the largest prize in the history of the European “EuroMillions” lottery. Joe Thwaite, age 49, is a communications sales engineer, and his wife Jess, age 44, is a hair salon business manager. Together, they are the fortunate new billionaires.
The couple, who have two children, purchased the winning ticket in the afternoon of May 10, just a few hours before the draw. They had remained anonymous until Thursday morning when they decided to reveal their identities at a hotel in Cheltenham, which is a seaside resort located in the county of Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom.
The previous record was held by an unidentified winner who received 211 million dollars and 170 million pounds in October 2019.
The information that would forever alter their life. According to Thwaite, he learned on Tuesday that he had won the lotto when he woke up at five in the morning to take the dogs for a walk. When he found out how much money they had won, he said that he “didn’t know what to do” with himself.
“I couldn’t go back to sleep, and I didn’t want to wake up Jess, so I lay there for what felt like an eternity,” he recalled. “It seemed like an eternity.”
The husband said that, in the meanwhile, he spent some time searching for a home to purchase that did not have a budget constraint and that when his wife’s alarm rang, he informed her, “I have a secret, I have something to tell you.”
The lady said that her immediate response was one of astonishment, and she chose to continue with her routine before they validated the outcome with the Camelot National Lottery operator. For her part, the woman said that she had won the jackpot in the National Lottery.
According to the BBC, Thwaite revealed he had already quit his position as communications sales manager after being presented by television personality Dermot O’Leary in a glamorous ceremony on Thursday. O’Leary played a part in the event.
In addition to this, his wife is “thinking about” what she should do with her employment at the hair shop that she co-owns with her sister.
The pair said that while their prior financial condition was “not awful,” the cost of living problem in the UK has been “affecting their life.” While the couple recognized that their previous financial situation was “not bad,”
“The last three years have been challenging for our family, just like they have been for many other people and families around the nation. Although my sister and I have made an effort to manage the company and its twenty workers, the business has been slow and challenging lately at the barbershop “the female speaker said.
The family has already settled into their new residence together with their many pets, which include three dogs, five hens, two geckos (a kind of tiny reptile), and three horses.
