Wednesday, irate clients took to social media to detail ongoing problems with their Bank of America and Zelle accounts. Users have reported lost funds, but neither company has provided a satisfactory explanation.
A Twitter user wrote, “I love how @BankofAmerica erased a sizable Zelle transaction that had already posted and that I had used to pay bills. They have left me with a huge balance in my checking account and I have no way to contact them. Unbelievable.”
Bank of America reported that the issue had been fixed as of 3 p.m. ET.
According to NPR, Zelle, a popular payment service used by millions, blames Bank of America for the issue.
A spokesman for the corporation assured us, “Transactions on the Zelle Network outside of Bank of America are not impacted.”
The Zelle support Twitter account reacted to customers’ complaints by blaming Bank of America for the issue.
The account tweeted back at least once in response: “Both the Zelle app and the Zelle network are now live and ready for use. We are aware of a problem affecting some customers’ ability to send and receive payments through Bank of America. If you need more recent information, you should contact Bank of America’s customer care.”
At approximately 10:30 a.m. ET, Downdetector saw a dramatic increase in complaints of problems accessing Bank of America’s website. Similarly, Downdetector noted an increase in Zelle users reporting outages as early as 9 a.m. ET.
After hearing complaints from customers, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted her displeasure with both businesses. She mentioned Bank of America and Zelle “had evidently failed their consumers once more, with funds vanishing from accounts.
Customers should be refunded and this should be corrected promptly. I’ve warned people before about severe fraud problems with Zelle, and this is their most recent misstep.”
Warren has long been an opponent of Zelle and an advocate for stricter regulation of the service. Warren reported last October that in 2021, illicit Zelle transactions amounted to over half a billion dollars.
