Next Thursday, March 3, a new version of Batman will be released, a film directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne), Collin Farrell (the Penguin), Paul Dano (Riddler the Riddler), and Zoë Kravitz (Selina Kyle, Catwoman).

The new plot of the DC character tells the second part of Batman’s fight against organized crime and corruption in Gotham City, while he continues in the transformation from ordinary citizen to superhero.

Born from countless editions in comics format, the character began his adventures in 1939. Many of the Hollywood movies based their scripts on these editions.

Before the premiere of the new edition of Batman, we recommend five of his best comics that will surely help you understand a little more about the plot and beginnings of the latest film version.

Batman: The Long Halloween

Between 1996 and 1997, the duo of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale made “The Long Halloween”, a 13-issue series set in Bruce’s first stage as Gotham City’s most famous hero.

Not only do we have a Batman taking his first steps, but two mafia families are about to go to war. Everything indicates that Carmine Falcone, who has an important role in the comic, will also be one of the capo mafias of the film, in the skin of John Turturro. His rival could be the Penguin, played by Collin Farrell.

Batman: Earth One

This version was published in 2012 and deals with a new version of the character, in a different universe called “Earth One”, which poses alternative versions of famous heroes such as Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. Among other details, they try to make them “more real”.

In this comic, we see a much more violent Bruce Wayne than we know, something that could be replicated in Robert Pattinson’s version of the Gotham hero.

Batman: Year One

Published in four issues of the Batman series (404 to 407 in 1987), it recounts the beginning of James Gordon’s career in Gotham and Bruce Wayne’s first stage fighting crime shortly before adopting the superhero identity.

The new movie by Matt Reeves, starring Robert Pattinson, will adapt the hero’s “year two”, so this story could be a good preview.

Batman: Year Two

Due to the success of the edition (Year One), it was a sequel published in numbers 575 to 578 of Detective Comics in 1987. The title of the work was different, but after the success of Year One, its creator decided to rename it as “Year Two.” In this part, Batman debates using a firearm to fight against a vigilante who does not hesitate to kill criminals.

Batman: Zero Year

In 2011, in another relaunch of the DC Universe (known as the New 52), the characters were introduced to entirely new worlds. The origin of Batman was presented in a crossover called “Zero Year (Year Zero)”, published between 2013 and 2014, with three-story arcs: Secret City (Secret City), Dark City (Dark City), and Savage City (Wild City).
