Dumbledore’s Secrets, which will be released in theatres on April 8, finally explores the romance between Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen), with the former confessing his love for the latter: “He was in love with you”.
In the new trailer, released this week, the true depth of the bond between Dumbledore and Grindelwald is shown, which would give more intensity to their next battle.
The author of the saga, JK Rowling, had announced in 2007 that Dumbledore was homosexual. The fact will be reflected on the screen.
In recent years, coupled with criticism of Rowling for her anti-trans statements, has also been a reluctance to portray the romance between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, hinted at in the original Harry Potter books.
Well, his time has come.
In the shared scene in the trailer, the two wizards are sitting across from each other in a restaurant, and Grindelwald asks Dumbledore if he really thinks he can turn his back on “his own kind.”
Grindelwald then reminds Dumbledore that they once shared an ideology, leading Albus to admit his motive: “Because he was in love with you”.
The opinion of the fans
It is unknown how much more the romance between the two will be explored in the film, but these seconds represent an important advance.
As Rachel Labonte of Screen Rant opines: “Ideally, Fantastic Beasts 3 will give the proper depth and respect to the relationship that is now arguably at its center; If (director David) Yates manages to do that, it would be a significant moment for on-screen LGBTQ+ representation, which would be no small feat these days.”
Fans were quick to express their opinions regarding the scene. On the YouTube channel HarryLatino, the comments were forceful.
Jorge López says: “Except for what JK Rowling says, the admiration and love that Albus felt for Gellert was evident since in a certain way he idealized him. He had found someone just like him in many ways. We don’t know how Grindelwald took advantage of that and how far their relationship went. Well, as he himself told Harry, ‘they shared a lot of things”.
This commented the user Hanae: “I see a lot of people confused… JK Rowling confirmed that Dumbledore and Grindelwald, during the summer of 1899, had an intense, sentimental and sexual relationship. A loving relationship. So yes, not only did Dumbledore have feelings for Grindelwald, but he reciprocated, they both loved each other.”
