Low-cost airline Spirit Airlines, based in South Florida (USA), canceled an undetermined number of flights due to operational challenges in the network arising during the last two days.

We are experiencing operational challenges in some areas of our network,  Spirit said on its Twitter account without detailing how many flights have been canceled or in which cities.

However, local media in Orlando, Miami, Florida, account for hundreds of flights canceled today, at least a third of the total of those scheduled by the airline.

Meanwhile, frustrated travelers have turned to social media in the absence of responses.

Tito Arias showed on the Twitter account a video in which a crowd is seen stranded at the airport with the caption:  “When #spiritairlines leaves you stranded in Puerto Rico with no employees in sight and holds your luggage and money as hostages” .

Arias tells this Monday that they were  “trapped overnight without clothing or essentials for our 3 and 1-year-old children and we are still without answers and looking for flights.”

The airline asked travelers on its website on Monday to check flights  “before going to the airport”  and pointed out that the fastest way to receive assistance is through internet chat.
