The Bulldogs of the University of Georgia proved once again why they are the top college football team. Georgia annihilated Texas Christian University 65-7 in the national championship game to repeat as champions with a perfect record.

Georgia scored 65 points, which is the most ever in a (BCS/College Football Playoff) title game.

The odds were stacked against TCU, and they had little chance against Georgia. Soon after the opening kickoff, Georgia’s defence stymied TCU’s initial drive and senior quarterback Stetson Bennett scored Georgia’s first points on a 21-yard rushing touchdown. The Bulldogs drove the field and scored a touchdown in under three minutes by picking apart the TCU defence.

It foreshadowed future events.
Midway through the first quarter, Georgia extended their lead to 10-0 with a 24-yard field goal after forcing a fumble on the Horned Frogs’ next offensive drive.

But on the next possession, third-ranked TCU scored. Max Duggan, quarterback for the Horned Frogs, led the team on a touchdown drive of 75 yards. Duggan, the Heisman runner-up, scored a rushing touchdown like Georgia’s quarterback did to bring the Bulldogs’ lead down to 10-7. For TCU, those would be the game-winning points.

A Bennett touchdown pass of 37 yards immediately put Georgia back in the lead, 17-7. Georgia’s defence halted TCU on its following series, and the Bulldog offence drove 92 yards in 10 plays to score on Stetson Bennett’s second rushing touchdown of the half, increasing the margin to 24-7.
Before halftime, the Bulldogs scored again on an interception by Duggan.

At halftime, Georgia’s comfortable 38-7 advantage was a result of the Bulldogs’ complete dominance (the first team to do that in the playoffs). The Bulldogs averaged 9 yards per play on offence in the first half, leading to 354 total yards.

TCU’s strong second-half performance began with a forced punt by Georgia. However, the Horned Frog offence was unable to get anything going, and the Bulldogs continued where they left off, with Bennett throwing another touchdown pass to make the score 45-7.

The game was effectively finished with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Stetson Bennett, the Bulldogs’ quarterback, accounted for six touchdowns (two on the ground and four through the air) before he was removed from the game 95 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Georgia was the defending national champion and came into the game undefeated (14-0). Georgia, led by Bennett (a former walk-on QB), crushed the strongest conference in college football, the Southeastern Conference. For the most majority of the year, Georgia topped the polls.

It had won the Big 12 Conference and had a 13-1 record heading into the championship game. TCU was a preseason underdog, with odds of 200-to-1 against them winning the national title.Nonetheless, the Horned Frogs’ consistent success throughout the season shocked many spectators. Yet in the biggest game of the year, they were unable to beat Georgia.

Playoffs for college football’s highest level, Division I FBS, have historically been dominated by teams from the Southeastern Conference. To date, six of the ten CFP champions since 2014 have come from the Southeastern Conference. In the CFP era, Georgia is the first team to repeat as national champion.

Unfortunately, one famous Bulldog wasn’t there to see it. Uga X, Georgia’s well-known mascot, stayed in Athens and did not travel to southern California for the big game. The bulldog wears a University of Georgia outfit and chills in an air-conditioned doghouse on the sidelines of home games. The 9-year-old bulldog’s owners told WTOC that the long travel would have been too much for him.

Uga X will, without a doubt, take pleasure in the impending Athens, Georgia triumph parade.
