What is clitoroplasty?

What is clitoroplasty

Although the clitoris was not officially discovered until the 16th century, when an Italian doctor became aware of its existence by studying the female anatomy exhaustively, it is an organ that has always been part of the woman. Known for its etymological origin as “the key to pleasure”, the only function of the clitoris is, in fact, to provide pleasure. What happens, however, when the hood that covers the clitoris is excessively protruding? When this happens we talk hypertrophy, a problem that causes the degree of sensory stimulation to be lost, causes discomfort due to the aesthetic aspect that it presents and, in some cases, even causes discomfort during intercourse.

How can clitoroplasty help us correct hypertrophy?

Also known by the nickname of shedding of the clitoris or hypertrophy reduction technique, clitoroplasty is an intervention aimed at restoring both the appearance and the functionality of the clitoris.

Many patients resort to intimate surgery self-conscious about the appearance of their clitoris; When the cap of the latter protrudes abnormally and excessively, both physical and mental discomfort occurs, especially because aesthetically the clitoris of the affected woman bears similarities to the male sexual organ (in fact, it is known as a “micro-penis”).

Beyond the physical aspect, it is also a surgery carried out to return the clitoris to its functionality. When the clitoris is excessively covered, a loss of pleasure is generated, since not enough contact occurs during intercourse. In the worst case, this anomaly causes discomfort to patients, so it is advisable to put yourself in the hands of specialists to correct the problem.

“By means of the de-hooding technique, the clitoris is left somewhat more exposed, producing greater pleasure during its friction”, assures Dr. Leonardo Imbriano, specialist in genital surgery and aesthetics.

What can cause an excessively protruding clitoral hood?

Although hypertrophy is usually associated with cases of hermaphroditism, the truth is that there are many reasons that can lead to it:

  • Postpartum trauma
  • Genetic constitution
  • Excess testosterone
  • Frequent intake of anabolics
  • Endocrine disorders such as adrenal hyperplasty

Combination with other intimate surgery techniques

What is achieved with the clitoroplasty is to restore the size of the cap that covers the clitoris, leaving it more exposed and elevating it if necessary. In fact, this last technique is known as clitoropexy, performed with the purpose of repositioning the clitoris so that it does not protrude from the labia majora. Clitoral sagging can be caused both by trauma during the conception of a child and by aging. It should be noted, on the other hand, that clitoroplasty is also usually accompanied by labiaplasty.

What type of intervention are we talking about?

Clitoroplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia and sedation, in an outpatient procedure that lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. After 48 hours, normal activity can be resumed in most cases, although we cannot speak of full recovery for several weeks.

There may be discomfort and itching during the first days after the clitoroplasty and it is advisable not to wear tight clothing while the discomfort persists. The area may present inflammation and, although this disappears after approximately 2 weeks, the final appearance will not be appreciated until a longer time has passed.

What are the contraindications?

To eliminate the risks of a postoperative period with incidents, it is best to strictly follow the specialist’s instructions. It is a procedure that does not present complications if the pertinent postoperative care is properly performed, which will vary depending on the case, according to the doctor and specialist
