Tony Awards 2022: Jennifer Hudson won an award and entered the exclusive group EGOT

Jennifer Hudson was one of the winners of the Tony Awards, awards that recognize the best of American theater, and whose 75th edition was held on Sunday, June 12. The actress and singer is the producer of “A Strange Loop”, a work that won the award for Best Musical.

With this, Jennifer Hudson entered the exclusive group EGOT, made up of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winners, and which, after Hudson’s victory, is made up of 17 people. Some of these artists are Rita Moreno, John Legend, Mel Brooks, and Whoopi Goldberg, the first African-American woman to win the award.

In 2006, Jennifer Hudson won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the movie “Dreamgirls.” In 2009, he won his first Grammy in the Best Rhythm & Blues Album category, for his self-titled album, and in 2017, his second, in the Best Theater Musical Album category, for his participation in the play “El color purple”.

She won the Emmy in 2021, as executive producer of the virtual reality animation titled “Baba Yaga”. “A Strange Loop”, the musical that has given him the Tony, was nominated for eleven categories, of which he won two: Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.

Another African American who had a great night was Ariana DeBose, who was chosen to host the 2022 Tony Awards, and who months ago won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s “Westside Story.”

In her speech to the audience, the actress was proud to be the host, now that theatrical productions are returning: “I am very proud to present the first Tony Awards since Broadway got its groove back… I am very proud that the theater is becoming more of a reflection of the community that adores it.”

One of the funniest moments of the night was when Ariana DeBose performed a comedic song about hosting, during which she ended up sitting on Andrew Garfield’s lap, who only managed to hug her.

The film with the most awards during the Tonys 2022 was “The Lehman Trilogy”, by Stefano Massini and Ben Power, which took no fewer than five awards out of a total of eight nominations.
