WhatsApp is working on allowing its entire Android user base to export their backup stored on Google Drive to be able to save it locally on their devices.

The instant messaging application reached an agreement with Google in November 2018 so that its backup copies (‘backups’) do not take up space in its users’ Drive. However, the specialized portal WABetaInfo announced earlier this year that Google will stop offering its unlimited plan for the storage of these copies.

Given this context, WhatsApp seeks to offer its users an alternative to continue keeping their backups without having to sacrifice storage space on Google Drive, as anticipated by this same medium.

To do this, the ‘app’ works to allow the export of stored backup copies. In addition, WhatsApp will also offer the user the possibility of carrying out the same process in reverse and importing the same backup in the file hosting service.

These copies include the entire history of a user’s conversations, from messages to videos, images and other types of files exchanged. The new functionality is still in the development phase prior to its rollout in update 2.22.13.11 of the Google Play Android Beta Program.
