The result left City 10 points ahead of United with just three games left for both teams.City’s coronation had been delayed after the team led by Pep Guardiola suffered a 2-1 home loss to Chelsea on Saturday. It is Guardiola’s third Premier League title with City in his five seasons in charge.
This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other, Guardiola said, referring to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused matches to be played in empty stadiums.
“This was the hardest. We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am very proud to be a coach here and of this group of players, ”added the Spanish on the club’s website. “Overcoming this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we have faced, and showing the consistency we have is remarkable.”
Despite the title, City had a difficult start to the season after scoring 12 points in their first eight games, their worst start since the 2008-09 campaign.
After losing to Tottenham Hotspur in November and falling to 11th place in the table, City prevailed in 22 of their next 27 games, including a 15-game winning streak and a record 11 consecutive league wins on the road.Guardiola’s team also won their fourth consecutive League Cup and can claim a hat-trick if they beat Chelsea in the Champions League final later this month.
Manchester United further delayed City’s title celebrations by beating Aston Villa on Sunday, but on Tuesday Leicester helped Guardiola’s side. Even if United beat Leicester and then Liverpool on Thursday, City could have won their seventh English league title with a win over Newcastle United on Friday.
The celebration will be considerably louder on May 23 when City host Everton at the close of the Premier League season with 10,000 spectators in attendance.
