LUMBINI (NEPAL)
For decades Lumbini has been an enclave that travelers passed on the road from India to Nepal, often ignoring that they were very, very close to the place where the historical Buddha was born. Today, thanks to the efforts of the international Buddhist community, Lumbini is a destination on the rise, but despite its heritage value this sacred place remains a sleepy detour of the backpacker route.
ARUGAM BAY (SRI LANKA)
Although Sri Lanka is emerging as one of the best travel destinations in the world, Arugam Bay, a surfing town on the east coast of the country, has managed to preserve its charisma almost miraculously. While the tourists invade the old citadels and mountain stations of the country, this enclave only knows barefoot surfers who frequent vegan cafes with scribbled notes on the doors of the hotels where it can be read: “We have gone surfing, we come back immediately”.
