NAGASAKI (JAPAN)
For the majority of international tourists, Nagasaki is synonymous with the tragic atomic bombing of August 1945. In an extraordinary turn, the city has turned that catastrophe into a joint call for peace, exemplified by a double part with the peaceful Park of the Peace of Nagasaki, where a simple monolith marks the point of the explosion, and the Museum of the Atomic Bomb, in which the hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bomb) make emotional appeals in favor of international nuclear disarmament.
CHIANG MAI (THAILAND)
With its legion of temples and majestic walls eroded by time, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Lanna seems to have eluded the pages of history. In it, travelers browse the stalls of ancient jewels while the familiar aroma of grilled tilapia on banana leaves floats in the air.
