The beard is in fashion. They come in different shapes, colors, and thicknesses and, according to recent studies, bearded men are even more attractive to women. However, many do not have a closed beard and decide to undergo surgery to fill those areas poorer in hair through micrografts.

The use of micrografts emerged in Japan in the 1930s for people who had suffered burns and accidents and had areas where hair would not grow back. At that time, implants were made using groups of hair and little disguised results were achieved with obvious scars. Today it is a highly perfected technique in which, depending on the case, several follicular units are still transplanted in a strip ( FUE ) or, if a small amount of hair is needed, a follicle-to-follicle transplant is performed using the FUSS technique.

Although they are typically used for hair grafts, their application is beginning to be used in other areas of the body such as eyebrows, beards, mustaches, sideburns, or even genital areas. Micrografts require very careful microscopic work to achieve good results.

The absence of uniform facial hair can make the face look childish or unattractive. All this added to the hipster fashion, making the beard another complement to the urban style.

In the beard, as in any other area, the techniques are the same;

FUSS: under local anesthesia, follicular units containing 3 or 4 hairs are extracted from a donor area and transferred to the recipient area, in this case, the beard.
FUE: hair is extracted using strips of several follicular units to implant it in the beard.

However, the beard and mustache have particularity and that is that the follicular units in this area only have one hair, unlike the units of any other part of the body that contain 3 or 4. Despite this, over time the implant will go unnoticed. Although each case is different, in more than 90% of the operations, the donor’s hair is extracted from the temporal and cervical area of the skull due to its abundance.

The implanted hair, especially in the beginning, follows the growth process of the donor area and its shape, however, over time it becomes more integrated into the recipient area and acquires its characteristics. The process in the capillary area usually lasts, in the FUE technique about 45-60 minutes, and in the FUSS between 5 and 6 hours. However, we will have to adapt these times to the requirements of each beard, which will normally be shorter than in other areas of the body.

The postoperative period does not usually involve any difficulty. Only 3% of treated patients have a relatively serious complication, such as infection in the scars or necrosis of the skin. Mild side effects such as small redness or irritation during the first days are more common. The scar stitches in the donor area will be removed in approximately two weeks.
