The eerie and bizarre ‘Addams Family’ musical is coming to Pueblo County High School.

The award-winning Pueblo County High School Arts Academy ensemble returns to the stage this week with four performances of “The Addams Family: A Musical Comedy,” a spring musical.

“Zombie Prom,” last year’s spring musical, took first place in three categories at the 2022 Bobby G Awards, a statewide award ceremony for high school theater. This year’s musical, an adaptation of the wacky yet popular Addams Family, features a star-studded senior class as well as a bunch of brilliant underclassmen.

Since its single-panel comic debut in 1938, the Addams Family has gone through various adaptations, including a 1960s television show, numerous films, and the 2022 Netflix series “Wednesday,” starring Jenna Ortega.

According to Taylor Gilman, acting teacher and director of “The Addams Family: A Musical Comedy,” the arts academy’s production would have its own “unique spin,” drawing influence from numerous iterations of the family, particularly the “silliness” of the 1960s sitcom.

Wednesday Addams, a young adult, falls in love with Lucas Beineke, a young man from a “normal” Ohio family, in the play. “Crazy happens when typical Ohioans mix with the wild, zany Addams Family,” Gilman explained.

During Hockey Week Across America, Pueblo children serve as junior referees at an Avs game. Rylee Armstrong, a senior at Pueblo County High School, is scheduled to play on Wednesday.

At the 2022 International Thespian Excellence Awards, she received a “superior” rating in Solo Musical Theatre. She intends to pursue a career in musical theater after graduation.

Fellow seniors Mark Gomez and Isabella Gernazio will play Wednesday’s parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams. Gomez has twice been named to the all-state choir, while Gernazio hopes to audition for Disney after graduation.

Pugsley Addams is played by Elliet Johnson, a state playwriting competition winner, while Lurch, the family butler, is played by senior Davian Harris. Craig Allen plays Uncle Fester, Autumn Armendariz plays Grandmama.

Kaden Gonzalez plays Lucas Beineke, Scarlett Liberato plays the folklorico ancestor, Chloe Okins plays the saloon girl ancestor, and Chloe VanEvera plays the pirate ancestor. The performances of “The Addams Family: A Musical Comedy,” like “Zombie Prom,” will be considered for the Bobby G awards.

“We’re all one huge family, and we trust each other,” Gernazio explained. “We are confident that we will all succeed because we have each other. We’re not going to let each other down.”
