Facebook will create robots with tactile sensitivity for its metaverse

Meta, the new name of the Facebook brand, has been working on several scientific projects that seek to revolutionize the user experience. Recently, the company announced that it created a division where they are looking to develop a sensitive ‘skin’ so that it can be used on the arms and legs of robots. All of this new technology comes hand in hand with the announcement of the Metaverse, demonstrating where creator and owner Mark Zuckerberg’s future plans are heading.

This ‘robotic skin’ has been developed by the collaboration between Meta and Carnegie Mellon University, and consists of the combination of a rubbery plastic less than 3 millimeters thick wrapped in magnetic particles with artificial intelligence for the calibration of the sense of touch.

Reskin is the name of the new technology for sensitivity in robots, which is capable of measuring a contact as light as 0.1 newton of force with an accuracy of 1 millimeter and controlling changes up to 400 times per second.

Artificial intelligence needs a 100-touch training of a human to obtain enough data and understand how to translate changes in the magnetic field from a sense of touch. This system only requires close monitoring equipment in order to understand electrical changes, and the material required to create it can be thinner and less expensive than other previously created robotic skins. Currently, the materials required for manufacturing barely reach 6 dollars, which would allow greater production of it.
