The Premier League has filed charges against Man City for allegedly breaking its financial rules.

Since being purchased by the Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group, Manchester City has been accused of breaking more than one hundred different financial regulations, and as a result, the Premier League has submitted the matter to an independent commission.

According to the regulations of the league, if a club is found guilty of allegations comparable to the ones Manchester City is facing, the club might be kicked out of the Premier League. This is the worst-case scenario.

When a club violates the rules, the club may get a point deduction, a fine, or a reprimand.

The league said on Monday that the alleged violations committed by City date back to the 2009–10 season and continue through the 2017–18 campaign.

The team, which was purchased by City Football Group in 2008, is also accused of not cooperating with and providing assistance to the Premier League throughout its inquiry, which began in December 2018.

The team, which has won the Premier League championship a total of six times since the Abu Dhabi acquisition, said that they were astonished by the league’s “issuing of these claimed infractions.”

According to a statement released by City, “the club welcomes the assessment of this case by an independent panel,” which will “objectively evaluate the substantial body of indisputable evidence that exists in support of its stance.”

The charges are the result of an investigation into City’s financial dealings that was initiated by the Premier League four years ago. The investigation was initiated following the publication of a batch of “Football Leaks” documents that were obtained by the German publication Der Spiegel and reviewed by Reuters.
