In the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup, played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid defeated Valencia on penalties. In the end, Real prevailed 4-3 in penalties after the score was at 1-1 after extra time. The winner of Thursday’s game between Real Betis and Barcelona will play in Sunday’s championship game.
Karim Benzema scored the game’s opening goal from the penalty spot in the first half. Ten goals for Real Madrid already this season, but Valencia tied the score early in the second 45 thanks to Samuel Lino. Within half a minute of coming out of the locker rooms, Lino beat a resolute Thibaut Courtois to a cross at the far post.
The game ended 1-1 after regulation and overtime failed to produce a winner. After a tense match, Real Madrid emerged victorious in the shootout. Later on, Courtois saved a penalty kick and became a hero. Eden Hazard spent the entire game on the bench.
