Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres today on Disney+ and Xochitl Gomez talks about joining the MCU

Don’t wait any longer, today “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ” premieres on Disney+, the Marvel movie expected by thousands.

Before you continue reading, we warn you that this note contains spoilers. This time we are talking about América Chávez, a bold and determined teenager who has the power to cross realities through a star-shaped portal, and joins the emblematic sorcerer played by Benedict Cumberbatch in an incredible adventure through parallel realities in  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The character, already known to fans of Marvel comics, comes to life thanks to Xochitl Gomez, a young actress who makes her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with this film and has already is conquering global audiences.

Welcome to the MCU

Gomez began her path to the MCU in February 2020 when she was just 13 years old and was auditioning for an unknown role. Her second audition came six months later, where she deduced that the project was related to Doctor Strange because the term “sorcerer” was referenced in the audition script.

A short time later, the most awaited news arrived. Amid isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the casting director of  DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS,  Sarah Finn, contacted her by video call. She “commented that she had something important to tell me and said: ‘Xochitl, welcome to the MCU! You are America Chavez ‘. She was so shocked! It took me a couple of weeks to process the news,”  says Gomez.

On the casting process and the search for her ideal América Chávez, Victoria Alonso, executive producer of the film, explains:  “We went through a very extensive search process with Sarah Finn and her team, and after meeting with hundreds and hundreds of young women, we came to Xochitl, who was the best choice for the character.”

“We were thrilled to have found someone who could embody the character with a fresh look at who America Chavez could be, and who could match the performance alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and Elizabeth Olsen,”  says Alonso, and adds:  “There was a cheek in Xóchitl, a spark. We saw the defiant essence of América Chávez in her.”

Bringing America to life

Once he knew the role was his, Gomez fully immersed himself in the process of preparing for the character, beginning with an extensive investigation of Chavez in the Marvel comics.

The actress tells that she fell in love with her instantly, highlighting the confidence she has in herself. Plus, Gomez says she loves how the filmmakers stayed true to the comics, but updated her character by making her a 14-year-old girl, younger than she is in the comics.

“ I took things that were in the comics and lightened them up a bit since she’s less experienced. She’s younger than any of her known appearances of her in the comics, and I think you can tell.

It was a fun challenge to explore what a younger, less experienced America could look like, but also hint at the serious leader she would soon become. She wanted to keep the energy of childhood and a little bit of that confidence of pretending until she makes it,” says Gomez.

In the process of creating America for the big screen, Gomez had the invaluable support of several MCU veterans, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, and Benedict Wong.

The young actress recalls powerful advice given to her by Olsen, who plays Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. “Lizzie told me to never be shy and to give my opinion and suggestions, which Marvel means when they say they want your opinion. I followed that advice,” says Gomez. “I am obsessed with details.

I stepped into my character, and it was very rewarding to see my comments turn into a scene.” complete. Given Gomez’s Mexican heritage, the creative team also felt it was natural to incorporate some of those influences into the character’s introduction in the MCU.

Represent and include

On the meaning of the presence of América Chávez in the MCU, Alonso reveals:  “This character was relevant to me for many personal reasons, but also because it was important that we make the effort to have all the boys and girls of this world represented.

In our universe and she represents the LGBTQ+ and Latino communities. She is the kind of character that I have been waiting for us to have since we started this journey with IRON MAN in 2008.

I am very happy that she is part of the MCU family and I know that she will be a great addition.”

In the same vein, Gomez shares:

“It’s great that fans can see a young girl in the middle of a great story like this, and know that the things that happen in the lives of our boys and girls are important because they impact who they are. they will convert when they are older, as adults. It’s exciting that hopefully, we get to see more of how things will unfold for America in the future.”

BARELY SCRATCHING THE SURFACE

Both the filmmakers and Gomez are quick to clarify that  DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS  is not America Chavez‘s origin story. Everyone agrees that she is just scratching the surface as to who this multiversal traveler is, and says that the studio is keen to show more of who America is in future stories. Without a doubt, this young Super Heroine is here to stay.
