The story of Marilyn Monroe is an endless source for the entertainment industry. Dead at the age of 36 under mysterious circumstances, the actress, model and icon of the sexual revolution of the 50s, Monroe continues to give people something to talk about, this time through a crude film that will leave glamour and flashes aside for Enter the darkest world of your life.

After several years of preparation, this film will be a fact and its premiere is scheduled for the end of this year, with the Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas in the leading role.

For its director Andrew Dominik, the classification of not suitable for children under 17 years that has just been published is nonsense. “If I watch an episode of (HBO’s) ‘Euphoria,’ it’s much more graphic than anything that happens on ‘Blonde,’ ” he opined.

The whole mess between the director and Netflix has to do with an alleged “menstrual cunnilingus” (allegedly to Marilyn Monroe) and a brutal rape, which has partly explained why the film has been rejected from the big studios for years because the director does not want lukewarm cloths when telling the story.

An adaptation of a novel about Marilyn Monroe

“It is a film about the human condition. It tells the story of how childhood trauma shapes an adult torn between a public and a private self. It is basically the story of each human being, but it uses a certain sense of association that we have with something very familiar, through exposure to the media”, said director Dominik, quoted by the Tomatazos portal.

“It takes all of those things and changes the meaning of them inside out, according to how it feels, which is basically how we live. It is the way we all operate in the world. It just seems very resonant to me. I think the project has a lot of really exciting possibilities, in terms of what can be done, cinematically,” he told Collider.

“Blonde” is an adaptation of five-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Joyce Carol Oates’ bestseller published in 2000. The cast includes Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale and Julianne Nicholson. The idea of making the film from the book began in 2012, and its production did not start until 2019.

Netflix will be the premier platform at the end of this year. The latest rating list from the Motion Pictures Association ranked Blonde as NC-17, meaning the content will not be suitable for viewers under the age of 17.

“Me too” movement

Dominik has other biographical films to his credit such as: One More Time with Feeling and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Cowardly Robert Ford). She thanked the “Me Too” movement for giving ground to the need to make visible what few know about a Marilyn Monroe abused and exploited to death.

“Nobody was interested in this kind of shit before or what it’s like to be an unwanted girl or what it’s like to go through the meat grinder that is Hollywood,” Esquire quoted. Ana De Armas is also facing one of the greatest cinematographic challenges of her career. Ben Affleck’s ex, 33, will give a face to an unexpected focus on this movie star.
