After the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is not only receiving economic sanctions from Western countries, but large technology platforms such as Facebook or YouTube have also taken action against the Russian state media outlet RT and other channels.

In this sense, through a statement, YouTube has reported that it has decided to prohibit the aforementioned Russian media from receiving money for ads that are published with their videos. As is known, ad serving is largely controlled by the said platform.

Likewise, Farshad Shadloo, a YouTube spokesman, said that videos from the affected channels will also appear less frequently in the recommendations. Furthermore, he added that RT and other programs would no longer be accessible in Ukraine due to a government request.

Even Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s digital minister, had already contacted YouTube to block Russian propaganda channels, such as Russia 24, TASS, RIA Novosti.

For its part, last Friday Meta, which owns Facebook, banned Russian state media from publishing or generating revenue from ads on its services anywhere in the world.
