WhatsApp: so you can protect your backups with a password on iPhone and Android

The latest feature of the messaging app makes it possible to encrypt the backups that are stored in iCloud and Google Drive.

Although all the conversations of the application are currently protected by the said security protocol, this measure did not extend to the backup made in the aforementioned cloud services, therefore it represented a potential danger for user information.

However, in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS and Android devices, the company has finally begun to incorporate encrypted backups, an update that will help prevent third parties from accessing the chat history without authorization.

How to activate encryption for WhatsApp backups?

To access this feature, you have two options: be a member of the WhatsApp beta program (available for iOS and Android users) or download the APK with the latest beta update (available for Android). In either case, follow these steps to enable it:

  1. Enter the WhatsApp application from your smartphone.
  2. Press the three-dot icon ⋯ to display the main menu.
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. Go to the Chats section > Backup.
  5. Select the End-to-end encrypted backup option.
  6. Press the Activate button.
  7. Create a password (it will be necessary to restore the backup).
  8. Tap the Create button to encrypt your backup information.

From that moment on, the backup of your conversation history will be more protected, so you will have to enter the password you previously chose each time you restore your WhatsApp account to a new device.

This key is completely private and will not be shared with WhatsApp, Facebook, Google or Apple. It is for that reason that if you forget it and lose your phone, the company will not be able to help you recover the backup of your chats.

How to access the hidden functions of WhatsApp?
