Apple WWDC 2022: CarPlay changes completely to adapt to giant screens and show more information, such as autonomy or internal temperature

iOS 16 is already here as the great star of WWDC 2022 , and as part of its novelties, a completely renewed CarPlay , which shows many more details not only of what happens inside the iPhone while we drive, but also of what happens in the vehicle itself. In those that are compatible with showing this information, of course.

This new CarPlay also arrives with the aim of making much better use of the huge screens that more and more cars bring. If a few years ago CarPlay fit well in panels of 7, 8, or 9 inches at most, today more and more brands present infotainment screens that even connect with the driver information screen that is displayed behind the steering wheel.

Much more information such as remaining fuel, temperature, revolutions per minute…

They are super elongated screens where there is much more information that this new CarPlay wants to take advantage of. In fact, it is multi-screen if the car has more than one and it offers this compatibility and shows volume and temperature controls for the car’s air conditioning, and the current speed (in a clear attempt to almost completely replace the manufacturer’s native system), the revolutions per minute of the engine, the level of fuel or remaining battery… And being able to customize the items that we see on the screen.

There is even some integration with HomeKit and customization to display elements such as the weather forecast, and even the option of having Apple Maps in the background on the screen behind the wheel, to be able to see the route to follow while diverting the gaze as little as possible.

This is undoubtedly the biggest leap in CarPlay to date, which until now had the vocation of being the perfect companion for the iPhone for in-car entertainment but now comes with enormous integration with the car itself, in addition to the vocation of filling its screens with an interface that makes sense of the idea instead of showing a small menu of icons.

It will arrive in 2023 and we will have to pay attention if you are interested in using it in your list of compatible cars, which will grow over time but will not be as long as we might like from the beginning.
