On Friday, one day after leading Canada to victory in the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship, Wright was transferred back to his junior team. With seven points in seven games, including a goal on his 19th birthday during the final against Czechia, he finished the tournament.
Seattle selected Wright fourth overall in last year’s draught, but he struggled to stay in the lineup for the Kraken, recording only one assist in seven games. In November, he was assigned to the American Hockey League’s Coachella Valley Firebirds for a four-game conditioning stint, during which he scored five goals.
Prior to being loaned to Team Canada, Wright returned to the Kraken for one game and scored once in a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on December 6.
The 2019 OHL Priority Selection saw Kingston choose the Burlington, Ontario native first overall after awarding him exceptional status. He spent two seasons with the Frontenacs, scoring 71 goals and amassing 160 points.
Wright was named CHL Rookie of the Year in 2020 and captained Kingston last season, becoming the league’s youngest captain ever.
With the fourth overall pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Windsor selected Miedema. 69 points have been scored by Miedema in 101 games for the OHL (25 goals and 44 assists).
