Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was questioned after information about his wife Akshata Murthy’s agency Koru Kids surfaced. According to the Guardian, Akshata Murthy owns stock in a childcare business that will gain from a new policy introduced in the recent UK budget.

 

 

Rishi Sunak’s wife is listed as a stockholder on the agency’s website. A new scheme introduced in the budget by UK finance minister Jeremy Hunt pays 1200 pounds to persons who train to become child-minders through an agency, which Akshata Murthy’s agency might benefit from.

Rishi Sunak did not reveal his wife’s involvement before the liaison committee, saying, “No, all my disclosures are declared in the customary way,” when asked whether he had anything to declare.

 

 

Wendy Chamberlain, the Liberal Democrat top whip, wrote to Sir Laurie Magnus, the independent adviser on ministerial interests, saying, “The Prime Minister’s family appears to have a relevant financial interest in Koru Kids – which has profited from a recent change in government policy.” There is no doubt that articles 7.1 and 7.7 of the ministerial code have been violated.”

“Rishi Sunak must explain why he failed to come honest when asked about the shares his family held in a company now set to financially gain from a childcare policy outlined in his budget,” said Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader.

 

“He has followed the protocol in terms of registering his interests as set forth in the ministerial code,” Rishi Sunak’s spokeswoman said of the dispute.
