The Indian cricket team cancelled their optional training session at the ICC Academy on Sunday, after New Zealand’s Super 12 triumph against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.
The Kiwis ended India’s faint hope of reaching the T20 World Cup quarterfinals. And even if India beats Namibia to finish third in the group of six on Monday, Virat Kohli’s last task as captain of the T20I squad would be a disappointment.
The game here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium will still be noteworthy. A win for India would be a fitting send-off for the departing coaches, who include head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, and fielding coach R. Sridhar.
Rahul Dravid will take over for Shastri.
It would be an ideal chance for Kohli to hand over the leadership to the one who will command the team in the next T20 World Cup. While the team is still to be announced, India’s new T20I captain might be revealed during the toss on Monday.
If the selectors and leadership have picked Chahar as the key wrist-spinner for the next World Cup, he deserves a shot in this match.
