The European Union countries approved the fifth package of sanctions against Russia on Thursday, which includes restrictions on individuals and financial institutions, as well as embargoes on Russian coal imports and supplies of high-tech goods. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in particular, stated that Germany should fully utilize the four-month transition period for phasing out Russian coal imports.
According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, it would be difficult for some European countries that rely heavily on Russian coal imports to refuse Russian shipments immediately. He claims that by utilizing free capacity at the Black Sea and Baltic ports, Russia will be able to shift coal exports to Asia-Pacific countries.
