This Tuesday another disagreement broke out between the leader of the Morena caucus in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. This occasion was due to the statements of the Executive against the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ricardo Monreal maintained that he sided with the “excellence” of UNAM in the face of the decision to send medical students home during the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of collaborating with the health sector as López Obrador reproached.

“I will not confront the President of the Republic for his opinions,” assured the Morenoite senator. “He has the right to express it and to say it, but I think that the institution, the UNAM, is an institution of great quality. The different evaluation studies show it, and as a university teacher I will always be on the side of UNAM ”, explained Ricardo Monreal.

This is not the first time that the leader of Morena’s caucus has contradicted the President. In fact, despite belonging to the party and expressing his desire to contend for the Presidency in 2024, Ricardo Monreal has been rejected by his followers, and as an example, his social networks are full of negative comments about his intention to proclaim himself Chief Executive.

The relationship between Monreal and López Obrador is not the best, even Morena’s representative himself has recognized that there is a “distance” between both officials and also with the 4T. For this reason, we share with you some of the controversies that have crossed during this year.

  • Just in April of this year, with the refusal of the electrical reform initiative as it did not obtain a qualified majority, Ricardo Monreal asked the Morenoite officials who were leading a lynching campaign against legislators against them to stop and respect the constitutional rights of the opposition representatives. ”. The Mexican president turned in his morning that they were radicals, but only against privileges and injustices.
  • Months before the vote for the electrical reform, López Obrador and Monreal staged another disagreement in which the leader of Morena in the Senate said that modifications could be made to the initiative because otherwise there would be economic losses. The President reversed himself on his March 25 morning statement by saying that he was “misinformed” for making that statement.
  • With the controversy over the disclosure of Carlos Loret de Mola’s income, Ricardo Monreal said that the environment against journalists “was not conducive” and an environment of tolerance was needed. López Obrador threw a stone into the air and said that the “moderates” who spoke out against the Executive’s attacks did not understand that Loret’s work was a coup and that self-defense was legitimate.
  • January 2022 was one of the most complicated months for the relationship between López Obrador and Monreal since the leader of Morena in the Senate told the Reforma newspaper that advancing the process of succession to the President in the ruling party would bring problems, and “ the who believe that by being more radical they can obtain the position or political position they yearn for, that’s for them ”. The Mexican president turned in his morning that they were radicals, but only against privileges and injustices.
  • Since we are on the subject of Loret de Mola, with the controversy over the report on José Ramón López Beltrán’s Casa Gris, which was accused by Morena of a campaign to hit the Federal Government, Monreal contradicted her by mentioning that he did not could affirm that fact, but that it was part of the reporter’s job and that it was an information campaign

Journalist Alejo Sánchez Cano published in his column on January 12 of this year in El Financiero that “everything was hunky-dory, however, one day everything changed and this happened after the resounding defeat of Claudia Sheinbaum in the elections on January 6. June of last year, where he lost twelve mayorships and later recovered two in court. Well, the person to blame for the defeat, according to the Morena radicals, gave him his first and last name and it was Ricardo Monreal.

He also mentioned that “from that moment on, the relationship between the head of the Federal Executive and the senator cooled down, to such an extent that they now hold their conversations through the media.”
