Kathy Griffin to undergo surgery for lung cancer

American comedian Kathy Griffin, whose long career as a stand-up comedian staggered in 2017 after being photographed holding a bloody Donald Trump head as a prop, revealed Monday that she has lung cancer.

“I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed. Yes, I have lung cancer even though I have never smoked!” Griffin, 60, said in a statement posted on Twitter.

He said his doctors were optimistic that the cancer was stage one and confined to his left lung, and that he was not expected to have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. “I should be up and running as usual in a month or less,” he wrote.

A pioneer in the female stand-up genre, her debut album, “For Your Consideration,” which she released in 2008, became the first by a woman to top the Billboard comedy charts.

He went on to release another five albums and has appeared in multiple movies and television shows throughout his career as a stand-up artist.

But in 2017, the award-winning performer posed with an object depicting the severed and bloody head of then-President Trump.

Although he quickly retracted and apologized, the gesture cost him a job at CNN and sparked outrage from conservatives and liberals alike.

Since then, Griffin has spoken publicly about the harassment he has been subjected to, and in an interview published Monday on ABC News he recounted how it helped him become addicted to painkillers and even attempt suicide.

“It never ceases to seem ironic to me that, just over a year ago, all I wanted was to die. And now, all I want is to live,” he said in the interview.

“It’s been four hellish years,” the comedian wrote in the Twitter statement, adding, “But I’m going to be fine.”

She was vaccinated against covid-19, and explained that “the consequences for not being vaccinated would have been even more serious.”

“Please stay up to date on your medical checkups,” he wrote. “It will save their lives.”
