EU diplomats failed to agree on Wednesday on a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, which included the closure of maritime and land borders between Russia and the European Union for Russian carriers. “EU diplomats were unable to agree on Wednesday on new sanctions against Russia proposed by the EC as technical issues had to be resolved, including whether the coal ban would affect existing contracts,” the agency said in a statement.

It is noted that it is not yet clear how the issues will be resolved, but diplomats hope to reach a compromise at a new meeting of EU envoys on Thursday.

The European Commission also proposes to ban the import of coal from Russia and the supply of equipment to the country, including electrical and transport. The European Union will also propose to impose a restriction on the import of potash salt from Russia.
