Controversy: United Kingdom granted city status to the capital of Malvinas

The British government called it a “fitting attribute” to the island, as the 40th anniversary of the war was commemorated.

The United Kingdom elevated eight towns to the rank of cities on the day that marked the seventieth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne. This event took place in October 2013. One of these settlements was called Stanley (Puerto Argentino), and it would later become the capital of the Falkland Islands. This took place exactly at the time when the islands had just finished completing 40 years since the conflict that put the British against the Argentines. The war was fought between the two countries.

Along with Douglas, which is situated on the Isle of Man, Puerto Argentino/Stanley is one of the two foreign enclaves that are listed on this symbolic list. The other enclave is located in the British Virgin Islands. The other establishment may be found on the Isle of Man. According to the official statements made by the government of the United Kingdom, it is anticipated that this appointment will facilitate the expansion of existing communities and open up new opportunities for the people who currently reside in those areas. The appointment was officially bestowed by the queen.

Because this year marks the fortieth anniversary of the Falklands War, the British Foreign Minister, Liz Truss, considers this designation to be “an appropriate tribute” to the area. The decade of the 1970s saw the conflict play out.

Truss said this on his Twitter account, saying, “We memorialize those who lost their lives and enjoy the flourishing community they have formed.”

A reaction from the government to this legislation is to be anticipated due to Argentina’s claim of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, which are referred to as the Falklands in British nomenclature. However, the precise nature of that reaction is dependent on the choices that are made by the royal family.

In 2016, he expressed his unhappiness with the choice of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, to spend six weeks in the archipelago partaking in military training. He said that William should have stayed in the United Kingdom.

During the struggle for control of the Falkland Islands, the British military lost 255 soldiers while the Argentine military lost 650 soldiers.
