DOES STANDING WORK ALLOW YOU TO BURN CALORIES?

A new study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology , found that standing instead of sitting for six hours a day could prevent weight gain, in addition to helping people burn calories.

The prolonged session has been linked to the epidemic of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Normally people sit up to seven hours a day, and even those who are physically active can spend most of the day in a chair. The study examined whether standing up burns more calories than sitting. The researchers analyzed the results of a total of 46 studies with more than a thousand 100 participants in total, which, on average, were 33 years old, 60% were men. His body mass index and weight was 24 kg / m 2 and 65 kg, respectively.

The authors of the research found that standing up burned 0.15 kcal per minute more than sitting. By substituting standing for sitting six hours a day, a 65 kg person would spend an additional 54 kcal per day.

Assuming that there is no increase in food intake, that would be equivalent to 2.5 kg in one year and 10 kg in four years.

Burn and / or waste standing or sitting energy

The gap in energy expenditure between standing and sitting could be even greater than the study found. The authors concluded that replacing standing by sitting could be another behavioral change to help reduce the risk of long-term weight gain. They suggest that more research is needed to see if such a strategy is effective and practical.

The data are also needed, they say, about the long-term health implications of standing for long periods.

In conclusion: standing, instead of sitting for six hours a day, could avoid weight gain and even help lose an average of 2.5 kg in a year
