In his new semi-autobiographical film, The Fabelmans, famed director Steven Spielberg narrates his own narrative, something he claims he “never had the nerve” to do before but is glad he did now.
The director who has won multiple awards admitted that he was “hiding” from the complete story since he was a teenager, despite having explored it “in parts and parcels” during his lengthy career.
The picture, which features Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, and Gabriel LaBelle, won best director Steven Spielberg at the 80th Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday night (10 January). Additionally, it won the award for best drama film later that night.
High expectations for the film have been stoked by its performance at the Golden Globes, which regularly foretells triumphs at the coveted Oscars awards just a couple of months later. When, then, can people in the United Kingdom go watch it in theatres? Here is a complete rundown of the subject.
In other words, who or what are The Fabelmans?
Sammy Fabelman (Michelle Williams) is 16 and wants to be a filmmaker like his parents (Paul Dano, Mitzi) in the film The Fabelmans.
The film’s official synopsis calls it a coming-of-age tale about “a young man’s discovery of a shattering family secret and an examination of the power of movies to help us understand the truth about each other and ourselves,” which is a pretty good summary of Spielberg’s formative years.
The film’s early standing as an Oscar frontrunner was cemented when it won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2022. The winner of TIFF has been nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards for the past ten years running.
Critical reception has been positive ever since, with the film currently boasting a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which calls it “part memoir, half homage to the power of movies.”
The review aggregation website continues, saying, “The Fabelmans sees Steven Spielberg digging at the family roots that helped make him a beloved filmmaker, and proving he hasn’t lost his magic touch.”
What does Steven Spielberg have to say about it?
When Spielberg accepted the award for outstanding director, he commented, “I’ve been hiding from this story since I was 17 years old.” A lot of roadblocks were intentionally placed by me in this tale. Throughout my career, I’ve told variations of this story, but I’ve never had the nerve to tackle it head-on.
He elaborated, saying, “The fact that everyone perceives me as a success story, and everyone sees all of us the way they perceive us – based on how they obtain the information…
But until we have the guts to tell the world who we are, they will never know, and I agonised over the right time to do so.
In retrospect, I should have acted sooner, but at age 74 I finally realised that it was imperative that I do so. I’m overjoyed that I made that decision. “I’d want to express my gratitude to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this tremendous honour.
