The Director of Sonic 2 Is Interested In Directing A Super Smash Bros. The box office success of Sonic the Hedgehog and its recently released sequel appears to be breaking the curse of video game movies. The Blue Blur and his pals are set to embark on more live-action adventures, but Sonic as a character has a gaming history that extends far beyond fighting Dr. Robotnik and befriending a variety of animal friends. Movie Bros.
Recently, director Jeff Fowler stated that he would be eager to direct a film adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. game. Since 1999, the acclaimed fighting game franchise has brought characters from a variety of video game franchises, garnering massive critical and commercial success. (In 2008’s Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic himself joined the roster.) “Nothing would make me happier than throwing all the characters into a battle royale,” Fowler said. “I mean, getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, everyone would be dying for that, right?” That’s right up my alley.” The licensing issue, of course, is the major impediment to a Smash Bros. adaptation seeing the light of day. Aside from Nintendo and Sega, characters from Bandai Namco’s Tekken, Capcom’s Street Fighter and Mega Man franchises, and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts have all appeared in the series. Before such a project could get off the ground, some legal work would have to be done, but if it ever happened, Fowler would be willing to do it.
With crossovers being all the rage these days — not just for films, but also for games and television — it appears likely that Super Smash Bros. will make a foray into expanded media in the near future. Having a fairly large and diverse cast on hand feels like a solid enough foundation for a film franchise or TV series, as Mortal Kombat has demonstrated with its two live-action films. (Who wouldn’t want to spend a few hours watching Toon Link get his head stomped in by Steve from Minecraft?) What will be interesting to see is how that will take shape, given that the video game adaptation boom currently has a fairly solid split between live-action and animation.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now in theatres. Let us know in the comments how (or if) you think a Super Smash Bros. adaptation would work.
