O Yeong-su, actor of “The Squid Game” wins Golden Globe at age 77

O Yeong-su won the “Best Supporting Actor” award for his performance as Player 001 in “The Squid Game” beating out competitors like Billy Crudup on The Morning Show and Succession actor Kieran Culkin.

“The Squid Game” enjoyed a resounding success on the Netflix platform, being one of the most viewed in the history of the streaming service; and South Korean actor O Yeong-su, known for his role as Player 001, won the first Golden Globe for best supporting actor on Sunday.

“The Squid Game” was one of the series that undoubtedly marked last year and it is because the story and its characters gave a lot to talk about, so it was undoubted that it would win a Golden Globe.

The series tells the story of hundreds of players who are in a precarious or no employment situation, who accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games, and whose prize is irresistible: a large sum of money; however, it is life-threatening.

O Yeong-su won the award for ” Best Supporting Actor ” on television for his portrayal of Oh Il-nam, also known as Player 001, becoming the first South Korean to win a Golden Globe.

The 77-year-old actor beat out world-renowned competitors like Billy Crudup, Mark Duplas, Kieran Culkin, and Brett Goldstein, from “The Morning Show,” “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” respectively.

O Yeong-su played the elderly contestant, who is secretly the one behind the deadly contest, in which people drowned in debt try to win 45.6 billion won as a prize.

This year’s ceremony was held in private, without the usual fanfare, after many actors, directors, and film studios refused to attend amid criticism of its organizer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for lacking decent ethics and ethnic diversity policies.

We are no longer us within the world, it is the world within us. Embracing the aroma of our culture and love for my family. Thanks to all of you in the world. I wish you a beautiful life, “the actor said in a statement.

President Moon Jae-In congratulated the actor and the series crew, saying that “The Squid Game” gave hope to humanity despite its shadowy depiction of society.
