Freeridge
On My Block introduced viewers to Freeridge, a neighborhood where they can stumble into a treasure map or a gang of sinister garden gnomes. On February 2nd, fans may catch up with the neighborhood once again when the spinoff Freeridge makes its debut.
Your new Core Four consists of Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), Ines (Bryana Salaz), Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson), and Cam (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), who stumble upon a box that may be cursed and become embroiled in a mind-bending mystery (and maybe even a little puppy love). Read on to learn more about which On My Block regulars will be returning to Freeridge, and to meet your new friends there.
Monterroso Mejia is well-known to sitcom viewers for her memorable supporting performances as the aspiring actress Maria Sofia in Curb Your Enthusiasm and the wacky classroom aide Ashley in Abbott Elementary. In Freeridge, she plays Gloria, the protagonist who is “unapologetically herself” and a “go-getter,” as Monterroso Mejia puts it. Gloria is the undisputed leader of the Freeridge gang; she is bright, focused, mature, and a double arm hang prodigy.
Telling Tudum, “I’m really pleased for fans to see a strong, fierce girl who just has their shit together,” Monterroso Mejia expresses her enthusiasm. And Gloria’s only real challenge? a fiery disposition that can either propel her forward or bring her into trouble.
When it comes to the Freeridge sisters, Gloria is the practical one and Ines is the one who likes to stir things up. Ines doesn’t care that there are regulations because she doesn’t know they exist (and is happy to maintain that blissful ignorance). According to Salaz, Ines can appear “standoffish” or “guarded.” When “the layers start getting peeled back,” the actor says, “you’ll understand why she’s that way.”
In 2014, Salaz rose to prominence as a competitor on The Voice. She has since starred in other television shows, including Malibu Rescue and Team Kaylie.
Wilson’s resume of accomplished works spans nearly a decade. She was featured in two music videos by Joshua Bassett, and she played a major role in the next live-action Kim Possible movie (2019).
For Freeridge, Wilson takes on the role of Demi, the most upbeat and spiritual of the Core Four. Wilson informs Tudum that he enjoyed learning about all of Tudum’s passions in astrology, tarot cards, crystals, and the spiritual realm.
It’s clear that Demi has a supernatural solution for everything. Demi’s knowledge will come in handy when the party faces a dangerous curse. Assuming, of course, that she is capable of controlling her emotional responses.
Another Freeridge alumni who has been a fixture in Hollywood for a long time is CAMERON Trainor. Although Trainor has been in several Disney Channel shows, his breakout role as Parker Rooney, younger sister Liv’s brother, on Liv and Maddie brought him widespread attention. In addition, he had a cameo in Boo, Bitch.
Trainor defies convention as the lone male member of Freeridge’s Core Four, the ever-analytical Cam. Trainor says she hopes others will learn that it’s alright to feel vulnerable and uncertain, but also to stand up for oneself and be strong.
On On My Block, Blow won over audiences as Marisol “Abuelita” Martinez, a nutty grama who preferred weed and mischief to knitting. She makes a surprising appearance as a new character in Freeridge, which is set in the same universe as the “gnomies” and riddles she previously explored.
Peggy’s role as Freeridge’s protagonist was “her own unique notion that she tossed out on a whim and we heartily welcomed,” co-creator Lauren Iungerich says Tudum. “We had the most fun ever bringing her to life, and she’s going to be a very surprising character to get to know.”
Blow had a successful career spanning decades before settling in Freeridge. He had roles in such iconic shows as The Jeffersons, Seinfeld, and 227, and was nominated for an Emmy for his work in the dramas The Affair and American Crime Story.
With the character of Jake M., Solomon found instant fame in the film Boo, Bitch (not to be confused with Jake C. or W.). As of right now, he is the new Rusty, one of the Core Four’s classmates at Freeridge. While Rusty’s initial interaction with the crew is business-related, he develops a romantic interest in both Gloria and Ines.
Wilson suggests that there will be a “big old gulp” moment in regard to Rusty.
ANDRE Adams, who played the youthful version of Sam Richardson’s swooning Seth Novacelik in Senior Year, stood out among the talented young actors in the production. Adams shows his more sentimental side as Andre, Cameron’s, uh, hopelessly devoted fiancé, in Freeridge.
On a show where viewers always have questions, Cinnamon (Alix) provides (very convoluted and oblique) explanations. She is the resident TikTok witch of Freeridge, and she suddenly appears in the lives of the Core Four, bringing with her plenty of foreboding predictions.
Alix may be a newcomer to the On My Block cast, but she is familiar with at least one of the other actors. Alix played the popular girl Lea, who ended up being the love interest of Solomon’s Jake M. in Boo, Bitch.
In On My Block, when the main characters, led by Diego Tinoco’s Cesar, sought advice, they went to Cesar’s older brother, Oscar (Julio Macias). Oscar had a lot of heart, despite his frightening nature (he wasn’t called “Spooky” for nothing). Tonio, the business-savvy member of the Freeridge gang portrayed by J.R. Villarreal (Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion, respectively), is a lot sillier sage than his predecessor. Gloria and Ines’ uncle Tonio is a very special man.
A parent is a necessity for any teen adventure, even if it’s just to keep an eye on things. San Pedro provides the stakes as the single father of Javier, Gloria, and Ines. The actor has guest-starred on Rosewood and NCIS, two popular police dramas on the small screen.
With the exception of Blow, who plays a new character, four of the performers from On My Block reprise their roles in Freeridge, while Episode 6 is directed by Garcés. Ruby (Jason Genao) is played by Garcés, who is recognizable to audiences as Ruby’s naturally worried mom, Geny. She has been on All My Children, The Shield, and several Harold & Kumar movies in the past.
Surely Geny isn’t the only Martinez sibling enjoying the Freeridge establishments. She is taking her husband with her, of course. Gutierrez, who also worked on Boo, Bitch, returns in the spin-off as Ruben Martinez, the patriarch of the Martinez family who is mourning the death of his mother, Marisol.
It has astonished and upset Ruben to learn that a woman who looks exactly like his mother has been seen in Freeridge. He and Geny have seen the mysterious twin about town, therefore they have joined the Core Four in their investigation.
DWAYNE Ikwuakor was always hilarious in his role as Jamal’s loving but tough father on On My Block (Brett Gray). In Freeridge, he reprises his role as Dwayne, the proprietor of a BBQ joint, and brings even more comedic skill to the role. Ikwuakor appeared in the action film The Gray Man in a supporting role.
FRAN Simmons, the third and last parent from On My Block, enters Freeridge as Fran, Jamal’s mother, a very demanding individual. Simmons has made guest appearances on shows including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and FBI: Most Wanted.
