Kim Petras becomes first transgender woman to win Grammy award for Sam Smith hit

This Sunday’s Grammy Award for Kim Petras is something holy.

The German-born pop vocalist, who initially came to prominence as a featured artist on Sam Smith’s electropop blockbuster “Unholy,” made Grammys history as the first transgender woman when she won the prize for best pop duo/group performance at the 65th annual Grammy Awards.

During her victory speech, Petras remarked, “Sam kindly wants me to take this award since I’m the first transgender woman to win.” “Sam, you’ve been my guardian angel and my hero. What can I say?”

During the afterparty after the awards ceremony, Petras continued her gushing about her bond with Smith.

Throughout his life, “Sam has been a great friend and supporter of mine,” Petras stated. “It means a lot to me to be able to communicate this with someone who has offered me such invaluable guidance in the face of other people’s judgements throughout my life. Honestly, I feel like I’ve picked up a lot of new information. Sam can’t throw me away, therefore I guess I’ll be here forever to sing the song with him.”

In addition to Smith, Petras paid tribute onstage to other musical influences, including Madonna (“I don’t believe I could be here without Madonna”) and Sophie, a trans electronic musician and DJ who passed away in 2021.

“You’re an inspiration,” Petras said Sophie. “I admire you, and your influence will remain in my music for all time.”
