Captain Marvel Joins the Cast of Fast Furious 10
The Fast and Furious franchise has a surprising history of incorporating superheroes into their films, whether it’s Vin Diesel as Groot or the more recent addition of John “Peacemaker” Cena in last year’s F9. (Not to mention the real superhero in the cast, Tyrese Gibson as a cop in Morbius.) Fast 10 is bringing Aquaman into the fold next year, and now it’s been announced that the franchise will be getting another superhero actor in the form of Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson.
Diesel revealed the news on Saturday night when he posted a selfie of himself and Larson smiling together. In welcoming her to “The Family,” he teases her character’s importance to the Fast universe’s “mythology,” and she’ll add “something you might not have expected, but yearned for.” It’s worth noting that Larson herself stated in February that she is a fan of the franchise and would love to appear in one of the films someday. “I’m obsessed with them,” she admitted to Uproxx. Congratulations to her for achieving her goals.
According to Diesel’s caption, Larson could be playing someone connected to characters from previous films — which isn’t really saying much, given that this series loves to draw from its own history. However, it could also be a completely new character created to fill a new role in the franchise. Diesel previously stated that a female-led spinoff was in the works, and since F9 attempted to address the franchise’s shortcomings in this regard — actors Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster reportedly wanted to ensure their characters Letty and Mia shared on-screen time together now seems like the right time to try and get that spinoff off the ground. Because Fast 11 is supposed to be the final installment in the main series, it would make sense for the penultimate film to set the stage for a new lead once Dom and his crew have put their cars in park for good. That, or Larson is simply reprising her role as Captain Marvel in order to propel Team Toretto even further into space.
Fast & Furious 10 will be released in theatres on May 19, 2023.
