Google detects a serious security flaw and alerts its users

Google detected a serious vulnerability in the security of the Chrome browser, for which it urgently recommended its users install the new emergency update created to protect its public from any risk around their personal data.

According to the company itself, it is being updated to version 99.0.4844.84 on Windows, Mac, and Linux due to a major flaw caused by an exploit for CVE-2022-1096.

“Access to details about bugs and links will remain restricted until most users are updated with a fix. We will also keep the restrictions if the bug exists in a third-party library that other projects similarly rely on, but have not yet been fixed.”
How to update Google Chrome for greater security?

The technology company announced that its first update, aimed at Windows, Mac, and Linux, will be implemented over “the next few days or weeks”, while in the second case Google is only talking about “a few days”.

Check if you already have Google protection

  • Go to the “Help” option in the upper right menu
  • Click on “Google Chrome Information”

If a version earlier than 99.0.4844.84 appears in Chrome information, Google noted that the automatic update might take longer on some devices. If an update is already available, it will be indicated in said section and if it is already installed, it will be reported.

What exactly was the flaw that left the seeker vulnerable?

The flaw in Google is about an exploit, an attack that takes advantage of the vulnerability, for CV-2022-1096. Specifically, there is talk of a type of confusion in V8, the Chrome component that is responsible for processing JavaScript code.

On the day it posted the announcement, Google reported the release of the Chrome 99 update for Android, which includes “stability and performance improvements,” but details will be revealed when most users have their browser update.

According to figures from Statista, Google Chrome is the most widely used browser, with a huge market share of 65.38% which puts it well ahead of its more direct competitors, Safari and Edge. In 2021 it added approximately 3.2 billion users.
