The US men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Olympic Games with a 95-81 victory against Spain.
The game was tied at halftime, but the Americans fell apart in the second half.
Kevin Durant led the US with 29 points, while Ricky Rubio led Spain’s attack with 38.
In the International Basketball Federation (known as FIBA), the USA is ranked No. 1 in the world, while Spain is No. 2. But instead of facing each other in a medal round, the defeats of both teams in the preliminary round led to this quarter-final showdown. This was a rematch for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medal.
Spain will leave the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games without a medal in this event.
The United States goes on to play Australia or Argentina in the semifinals. Argentina and Australia play later this Tuesday.
Earlier, Slovenia beat Germany 94-70 to advance to the semi-finals. Zoran Dragic had 27 points, while Luka Doncic had 20 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Slovenia will face the winner of the quarterfinals between France and Italy.
