Maya Moore Irons Announces WNBA Retirement, Details Her New Book, ‘Love And Justice’

Maya Moore Irons and Jonathan Irons have written their inspirational and uplifting life story to inspire others.

While at the height of her career in the WNBA, the top player took time off to devote herself to the cause of getting a wrongfully convicted man, Jonathan Irons, released from jail. Their relationship evolved into love during his 23 and a half years in prison, and when he was finally exonerated, Moore was there to welcome him home.
They tied the knot in 2020, not long after Irons was set free. On Monday, they appeared on “Good Morning America” to talk about their new book, “Love & Justice: A Story of Triumph on Two Different Courts.”

She described the experience of reading their entire history in one sitting as “very overwhelming” because of the length of time that has passed since its events. “You’re trying to take things one day at a time on the journey and in the fight. It is mind-boggling to me how God orchestrated every detail of Jonathan’s life and how reading about it all at once increased my admiration and motivation for him.”

Her husband described the ordeal as “extremely painful” and revealed that after consulting a therapist, he found “the more I read it, the more it helped me to get through.”

The light bulb went out and I realized that I had moved on from that phase of my life. I can finally say, “I’m free.” Just kept having to tell myself, “Definition of irons given.

However, Irons was able to comprehend, despite his troubled upbringing, “I had a lot of stuff stolen from me. And while I still feel that rage and grief, I make a conscious effort every day to focus on being thankful for the present moment since I never know what tomorrow may bring. I could still be behind bars, but thankfully, I’m not. I want to make that my home and devote my attention to appreciating the good fortune I already enjoy. A wife and a son have blessed my life.”

The book details Irons’ time spent in prison and his efforts to understand the law and challenge his conviction. Moore recounts how she became a professional basketball player and how she met Irons through a relative who was involved in his legal fight. Additionally, it covers their life after he was released from prison, including marriage and parenthood, and includes love letters they sent before he was released.

According to Irons, his wife, the “great and mighty” Maya Moore, is “a sweet, loving, and nurturing person who is my best friend,” which he discovered while writing this book. She is “here and now,” “present,” and “aware.”

I had no idea of his level of brilliance until now. It’s one thing to talk to him on the phone, assist him fight for justice, and witness his bright legal mind; it’s another to meet him in person and learn that he’s also a fantastic organizer, business founder, parent, friend, and more “”, she remarked. “It’s been inspiring to see his shepherd’s love for his people. Now that I have a partner, I can finally relax.”

The basketball legend, who led the Minnesota Lynx to four WNBA titles and was named league MVP in 2014, made her retirement announcement on “GMA.”

There comes a moment when it’s best to call it quits in the professional basketball world, and I feel like that time is now. I quit after the 2014 season, but I never felt ready to call it quits “…she explained. “This is a wonderful time for us as a family and for the progress we’ve made, and I hope to carry that momentum into the future. I’m hanging it up because I want to devote my time and energy to my family, our neighborhood, and our charity.”
