The bombing of a pediatric hospital in the Ukrainian port of Mariupol, besieged by Russian troops, provoked an outcry of global outrage on Thursday.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson denounced an “immoral” attack, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a “war crime” committed in that strategic port on the Sea of Azov.
The White House, for its part, lashed out at the “barbaric” use of force against civilians, while the UN and the World Health Organization ( WHO ) called for “the immediate cessation” of the attacks on health facilities.
Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian forces of attacking more than 60 medical centres since the invasion began on February 24, a day after a Mariupol mother and child hospital was heavily damaged by shelling.
The Minister of Health, Viktor Liashko, has numbered 63 facilities attacked and has reported at least five deceased medical workers. In addition, another ten would have suffered serious injuries, according to the UNIAN news agency.
The World Health Organization (WHO) denounced on Wednesday that at least 10 people have died and 16 have been injured in 18 attacks in Ukraine against health centers and ambulances, both objectives theoretically protected also in case of conflict.
