Russia and Ukraine are at war, and according to the United Nations (UN) and the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, located in Ukraine and the largest in Europe, was taken by Russian troops.
The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, announced that Ukraine informed him that a Russian commander directs the operations of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
Likewise, he announced that communications with the plant are limited and that the Ukrainian nuclear regulator also has communication problems with the personnel of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
It should be noted that the usual staff of the nuclear power plant is working normally but it is the management who is under the orders of the Russian military who took control since last week.
Rafael Mariano has mentioned that said action is “contravening the essential pillars of nuclear safety”.
On March 3, Russian soldiers attacked the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, which put the country on alert because if it were to explode, the disaster would be “ten times larger than Chernobyl.”
