Confirm outbreak of avian flu in the United States: slaughter more than 15 thousand birds

The United States authorities indicated that no cases have been detected in humans, so it is not a public health problem

A highly pathogenic avian flu has been detected in a flock of non-commercial backyard birds on New York ‘s Long Island, federal officials confirmed .

Samples from the flock were tested at the Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center and the results were confirmed at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service laboratories in Ames, Iowa.

The New York state authorities have isolated the place in Suffolk County and the birds on the affected properties “will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease,” explained the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA for its acronym in English) in a statement in which he stressed that these birds will not enter the food system.

The virus was detected on commercial turkey farms in southern Indiana, in a commercial broiler flock in Kentucky , and in a mixed-species flock of backyard birds in northern Virginia.

State authorities in Indiana on Saturday confirmed the detection of the virus in a fourth commercial flock of chickens in that state. They have begun culling all 15,200 birds on the farm where the latest problem was detected to prevent the spread of the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the recent detection of avian flu does not currently raise public health concerns . No cases of the virus have been detected in humans in the United States, according to the USDA.
