Alarming increase in COVID cases in Cameron County

Alarming the increase in positive cases of COVID 19, in Cameron County, which has been classified as “high risk”, under the CDC COVID-19 Community Level index.

Authorities mention that the rapid increase in cases may be associated with multiple reasons, including the more contagious nature of the Omicron variant, the low percentage of booster vaccinations, and the relaxation of precautions such as face masks, gatherings, and travel.

The CDC recommends the following:

• Wear a face covering when crowded and on public transportation.
• Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations.
• Get tested as soon as possible if you have symptoms.
• If you are at high risk for serious illness, consider taking extra precautions by consulting with your doctor for additional treatments.
• Based on the information provided by Cameron County authorities, COVID-19 treatments are available, including the national Test-to-Treat program. This program gives people quicker and easier access to testing and, if positive, immediately receiving life-saving medicine, all in one place.

Health experts note that people are best protected from COVID-19 disease when they are up-to-date on all COVID-19 vaccinations, including receiving all recommended boosters.

All first dose, second dose, and booster are available at all Cameron County Public Health clinics. Pfizer’s vaccines for babies 6 months of age and children under 5 years of age are also available Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson.
