An impressive video, which testifies to the ferocity of the animal kingdom. A videographer managed to film the fight between two bears, a male, and a female, at the edge of a cliff in Spain, in the province of Palencia. The first seemed to want to attack the cub of the second, who fiercely defended his little one.
The two plantigrades, unfortunately, ended up falling from the terrain where they were fighting. They hit some rocks, the video shows. A fatal outcome for the male, who was killed. The female made it out, but Spanish authorities had not yet tracked her down by midweek and were concerned that she had failed to find her cub. Especially since she had already lost her second newborn recently, perhaps killed by this same bear or by another, specialists said on social networks.
FREQUENT BEAR CUB ATTACKS
“Mothers often have to defend their young against attacks by males who seek to bring them back into heat,” explained the organization Nature Castile and León. “Like other animals, the bear has an instinct for reproduction. He is looking for bears with their cubs to kill the cubs, the president of the Brown Bear Foundation, Guillermo Palomero, told AFP. “The bear goes into heat two or three days later, and this infanticidal bear can mate with her and leave her genes,” he added.
The regional government, for its part, informed that “technical personnel, veterinarians, environmental agents, environmental protectors and the Bear Patrols of the Natural Heritage Foundation”, as well as members of the Civil Guard, participate in the search to find the female bear and her cub.
According to the Brown Bear Foundation, 330 of these plantigrades live in Spain in the Cantabrian mountain range and 70 in the Pyrenees.
