Newark activates code red due to extreme heat
According to Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Department of Health and Community Welfare, the city of Newark, which is located in New Jersey, has activated code red through Sunday because temperatures are forecasted to climb into the mid-90s and the heat index is expected to rise to 98 degrees over the course of the weekend.
The Newark Health Department is urging citizens to take steps to avoid catastrophic diseases that may occur from high heat, particularly among more susceptible groups such as the elderly and those who suffer from chronic health disorders or mental health conditions.
Vulnerable Residents in Newark are encouraged to stay cool by turning on their air conditioner, drinking water often, and avoiding vigorous exertion as much as possible, particularly during the warmest parts of the day.
The City would like to remind residents that emergency shelters are open during extremely hot weather and that they have partnered with the City to provide overnight shelter for homeless residents. In addition, the City reminds residents that they have a responsibility to provide shelter for homeless residents. Call the Office of Homeless Services at (973) 877-9481 between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, for further details regarding the services provided by shelters.
The Office of Homeless Services in Newark has entered into a contract with Bridges, Inc. to serve the city’s homeless population with outreach and engagement services.
Bridges, Inc. may be reached at 908-858-7019 if you have any information on homeless people who are in need of help.
