Luxury goods seized: wind of panic among Russian oligarchs

A wave of panic seems to be spreading among Russian oligarchs around the world after United States President Joe Biden announced during his speech on Tuesday that he is joining his European allies “to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments and your private jets”.

Since then, two yachts worth a total of more than $1 billion have been immobilized in France and Germany. Others, luckier, take refuge in the Maldives and other tax havens and ports.

The biggest yacht in the world, worth a billion dollars, is stuck in the port of Hamburg. German authorities told Forbes magazine, which reported Wednesday that the Dilbar had been seized, “no yacht leaves port without our permission. »

Why hasn’t it been officially entered yet? It is registered in the name of a company in the Cayman Islands, a tax haven, and it is difficult to establish with certainty that it belongs to Alisher Usmanov. He built his fortune bordering on $25 billion by investing in the Russian mining and oil industries.

BUILDINGS INSIGHT

Luxurious properties could be seized by the US government. By sifting through the real estate registers, the New York Post discovered 15 buildings near Central Park, with a purchase value of nearly $400 million, which belong to the Russian oligarchs and their families.

Seen here is one of them, owned by aluminum giant Oleg Deripaska, on 64th Street.

BLOCKED AS HE WAS ABOUT TO FLEE

The yacht of the leader of the oil company Rosneft, Igor Sechin, was seized on the night of March 2 to 3 near Marseille.

The crew was in the process of making an emergency departure to save themselves from French territorial waters. The Amore Vero is worth more than $150 million, measures 86 meters, and can accommodate 14 people on board in addition to the 28 crew members.

Nicknamed “Darth Vader”, Sechin is considered a close adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

EVERYBODY INSIDE!

According to an analysis by Bloomberg, boats of Russian tycoons have been converging on the Maldives and Seychelles since the start of the war against Ukraine and particularly since Joe Biden’s speech on Tuesday.

The four biggest yachts in the Maldives right now are believed to be Russian-owned.

Considered as tax havens, these countries will probably not make it easier for Western authorities to punish the wealthy Russians.
